About Massage Procedures and Techniques
Massage is a traditional hands-on healing method. There are various styles and techniques of massage. However, the foundation of many popular massage techniques is Swedish massage, which is a whole-body oil massage intended to relax the muscles and joints. Specific massage modalities using the Swedish massage technique include deep tissue massage, sports massage, and prenatal massage. Other well-known massage modalities include shiatsu, hot stone massage, and reflexology. Please use the left navigation bar and read descriptions of different massage techniques.
While there are many different massage techniques and styles, it can be generally divided into two types: “therapeutic massage”, which is more geared towards addressing specific health conditions and “relaxation massage” which primarily aims to encourage deep relaxation. The sports massage and trigger point massage are examples of therapeutic massage while the aromatherapy massage and hot stone massage are examples of relaxation massage. However, almost all the massage methods, including aforementioned massage techniques, can be both therapeutic and relaxing at the same time. During a massage session, your therapist works with the muscles, soft tissues, and joints of the body in a variety of techniques in order to benefit your overall health and wellbeing.
Historically, virtually every culture around the world has utilized massage in some form of a healing method. For instance, the Chinese have used massage for healing applications for thousands of years. In fact, the Chinese massage technique called tuina is still an important component of traditional Chinese medicine today. Swedish massage made an appearance in the United States in the mid-19th century. Since then, varieties of massage techniques and methods have been introduced. Today many therapists have their own unique massage procedures, incorporating various traditional and modern massage styles and techniques.
